Parambikulam Aliyar Treaty dispute: Meeting between CM of Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Thiruvananthapuram: A meeting was held between Tamil Nadu and Kerala on the Parambikulam Aaliyar Pact. CMs of both states also attended this meeting. After the meeting, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told that the Parambikulam Aaliyar Pact is to be reviewed. A 10-member committee consisting of 5 members from Kerala and Tamil Nadu will be formed. The meeting date will be finalized within a week. Kerala CM P Vijayan and Tamil Nadu CM Palanisamy were very positive about the meeting. In the midst of the meeting, 25 people were arrested due to protests.

The Tamil Nadu Police had said that we had received intelligence about a group of people planning to protest during the Chief Ministers meeting. We found two vehicles from the city along with 25 people and took them into restrictive custody. Simultaneously, the police said during the investigation that the arrested people claimed that they belong to a Tamil Nadu-based river water recovery committee and came to Thiruvananthapuram to submit a memorandum to the two chief ministers regarding the issue of river-water sharing. 

Police said that those arrested were under questioning. Parambikulam Aliyar Project is a joint project of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Under this project, six rivers flowing westward in the Annamalai hills and two rivers flowing westward into the Chalakudi River have been merged. There is a dispute between many states of the south over river water sharing.
