New Delhi – Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha has passionately called for the inclusion of yoga in the Asian Games. In a letter to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Usha emphasized yoga's global popularity and India's role as its spiritual home, underscoring the importance of showcasing yoga on international platforms.
On Wednesday, PT Usha urged OCA President Raja Randhir Singh to consider adding yoga to the Asian Games lineup. She pointed out the widespread celebration of the 10th International Day of Yoga on June 21, noting the practice's immense global acceptance and the significant benefits people worldwide have experienced.
Usha argued that India, being the birthplace of yoga, should lead the initiative to include it in the Asian Games and eventually the Olympic Games. She highlighted a recent initiative by the Louvre Museum in Paris, which plans to host yoga sessions ahead of the upcoming Olympic Games, as an example of yoga's growing international recognition.
Additionally, Usha mentioned the strong support from Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who views the inclusion of yoga in the Asian Games as a crucial step toward its eventual presence in the Olympics. "We need our indigenous sport to be on such platforms," Usha remarked.
