PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy requested Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday to give funding for the reconstruction of the damaged Cuddalore road on National Highway-45.

The Chief Minister stated in a letter to the Union Minister that Rs 19 crore has been sanctioned for road relaying. He has also asked Gadkari to direct the officer in charge to provide an administrative sanction for the Union territory authorities to begin work on the project.

Due to potholes and cracks on the road, travel on NH-45 from Indira Gandhi Square to Mullodai near the Cuddalore district border with Tamil Nadu is difficult, if not impossible.

The floods that ravaged the Union territory in 2021 have taken their toll on the route, and the Chief Minister has described the wear and tear on the road in his letter, pledging to offer administrative sanction for the same as soon as possible.

The letter stated, "This is a critical requirement for the Puducherry region to ensure that the road is free of potholes."

On October 12, 2021, a proposal for road rehabilitation work was filed to the Regional Officer, Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways (MORTH) in Chennai. Following this, on February 22, 2022, a letter was submitted from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) Chennai regional office to the Chief General Manager, NHAI, New Delhi, with recommendations to issue the NOC.
