Story of worship
Lord Krishna kept the Govardhan mountain on his finger for 7 days to protect people from torrential rains. Lord Indra got angry on seeing this incident, and he made the rain more intense. All the Brajwasis were safe under that Govardhan. Lord Sri Krishna placed the mountain below his finger on the seventh day and celebrated Annakoot with Govardhan Puja. And since then Govardhan is worshiped on the next day of Diwali on the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, and Annukut is celebrated.
