Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has expelled more than 150 workers who rebelled and contested as an independent in the civic polls to be held on February 27 in West Bengal. Voting is to be held on February 27 in 108 municipal bodies of West Bengal. On Sunday, the TMC expelled 61 of its workers who had contested the February 27 civic polls as independent candidates. All these workers are from North 24 Parganas district.
Around six TMC rebels had earlier withdrawn their nominations filed as independents following a warning from TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee. North 24 Parganas TMC chief Jyotipriya said that our leadership has given a clear message to these leaders, that nominations have to be withdrawn after filing nominations as independents, some candidates did this, but most did not. Today we have decided to expel these workers from the party.
For the past few days, the party has expelled more than 150 rebels, who had decided to fight against TMC candidates across Bengal. Earlier till Saturday, the party had expelled 84 workers from 11 districts from the party. Let us tell you that on February 17, TMC gave an ultimatum to its rebel leaders to face expulsion if they do not withdraw their candidature within 48 hours.
