Amritsar: The Congress government in Punjab had spent away lakhs of public money to give VVIP treatment to mafia Mukhtar Ansari in jail. Along with this, more than Rs 55 lakh was also spent to save Mukhtar Ansari from the Uttar Pradesh government. This has been revealed in the investigation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of the state. Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was imprisoned for over two years in Punjab's Rupnagar jail.

An inquiry by the Bhagwant Mann government in the state has revealed that the Congress government spent Rs 11 lakh per hearing to a senior Supreme Court lawyer to fight Ansari's case. There were a total of 5 hearings in this case. Thus, a total of Rs 55 lakh of taxpayers was spent off on the fees of Mukhtar Ansari's lawyer. According to Jail Minister Harjot Bains, the lawyer allegedly took Rs 5 lakh on the day the hearing did not take place. The bills raised by the lawyer are still pending and the AAP government has refused to approve the bills.

Jail Minister Bains has clearly said that why should we pay a bill of Rs 55 to save a gangster? The report further said that the gangster was given VVIP treatment in a barrack, which was meant to house 25 prisoners, but Mukhtar Ansari was living alone in that barrack under the Congress government. Harjot Bains also claimed that the jail authorities had also allowed Mukhtar's wife to stay with them in the jail. Let me tell you that there are many cases registered against Mukhtar in UP, in such a situation, the UP government wanted to take Mukhtar in its custody, but the Congress government of Punjab was trying hard to not allow this to happen due to Muslim appeasement. Even, just to save him from the action of the UP Police, Mukhtar was kept in a Punjab jail on the basis of a suspicious FIR, so that his comforts could be taken care of and the 'vote bank' of the Congress was not offended. After a lot of struggle, the UP Police got Mukhtar's custody on the orders of the Supreme Court.
