The Punjab government has decided to build four new testing labs in the wake of the war against Corona and appoint 131 staff in them. The Cabinet has also approved the proposal of the Medical Education and Research Department to fill four new posts of Assistant Professor (Microbiology) in these labs. All appointments will be through outsourced.

On Monday, in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, it was decided to set up Punjab State Forensic Sciences Laboratory and Punjab Biotechnology Incubator Lab in Mohali. A lab will be set up at Northern Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Jalandhar and Sri Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Ludhiana. This will give the capacity to do 13,000 tests per day. Currently, medical colleges in Patiala, Amritsar, and Faridkot have the capacity to do 9000 tests per day.

In his statement, the government spokesman said that all the appointments will be done through outsourcing on behalf of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences Faridkot. Appointment of 131 staff members will cost Rs. 17.46 lakhs per month while for the posts of Adhoc assistant professors it will cost 3.06 lakhs per month. This amount will be given from the Provincial Disaster Management Fund. These 131 staff members include the posts of Research Scientist (non-medical), Research Scientist, Lab Technician, Data Entry Operator, Lab Attendant and Sweeper. In another decision, the Cabinet has approved the reappointment of the Teaching Faculty serving at the Government Medical College, Patiala-Amritsar and Ayurvedic College in Patiala after completion of 62 years of service. The age of reappointment for Medical / Ayurvedic Faculty will be up to 70 years while for Dental Faculty it will be 65 years.
