Amritsar: Punjab's Congress government on Monday increased the dearness allowance of its employees from the existing 17 per cent to 28 per cent of the basic pay, putting an additional burden of Rs 440 crore per month on the exchequer. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting led by CM Charanjit Singh Channi a few months before the Punjab assembly elections. Addressing the media there, CM Channi said that increasing dearness allowance (DA) from 17 per cent to 28 per cent will put an additional burden of Rs 440 crore every month.

The Punjab CM said the DA has been extended from July. He said employees are the backbone of the state administration and reiterated their government's firm commitment to give top priority to their welfare. He also announced that employees recruited after January 1, 2016, will also be given the benefit of a minimum increase of 15 per cent in revised pay like other employees.

He said, however, the salary of a junior employee will not be fixed beyond the salaries of his seniors. CM Channi further said that representatives of various employees' unions have assured them that they will not follow the path of agitation but will resolve their issues through mutual discussion.
