Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minster Bhagwant Mann on Friday announced that on June 15, elegant Volvo buses will begin running from Punjab to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi.

"The people have given us the mandate to serve the state by destroying the mafia." The chief minister remarked in a video message announcing the commencement of the Volvo bus service, "Our government has already reduced the booze mafia with our new excise policy, and now I am glad to say that now the transportation mafia will also be a thing of the past."

Mann decried the fact that private transporters have operated buses on this route for decades, "looting the public by pricing according to their own whims and fancies," he said. He said that these people monopolised the market and exploited the general public.

The chief minister said that a number of NRIs who had come to Punjab from other countries had always complained to him about why only private companies were allowed to operate buses on this route and why government buses were not allowed to run on it.

He claimed that, in order to put a stop to the transportation mafia, the "pro-people government of Punjab will run these super deluxe buses," which will charge passengers less than half of what private transporters charge and provide double the amenities.  He said that these buses can be booked easily on the Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS websites. The timetables for these buses, both to and from, will also be published on these websites, he added.
