Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab chief minister-designate, announced Monday that he will quit as a member of parliament. He is a two-term Member of Parliament representing the state's Sangrur legislative seat. "I shall resign as Sangrur's Member of Parliament when my return to Delhi today. For many years, the people of Sangrur have showered me with love; many thanks for this. I now have the opportunity to serve the entire province of Punjab. I guarantee the people of Sangrur that their voices will be heard in the Lok Sabha again in a few months," Mann said in a Punjabi tweet.

On March 16, the 48-year-old AAP leader will be sworn in as Punjab's chief minister. The ceremony will take place in Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of Nawanshahr district's legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swept to victory, securing 92 of the 117 seats in the Punjab assembly. It decimated the Congress and the combined SAD-BSP. Mann won the Dhuri assembly seat by 58,206 votes over Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy.
