Punjab Govt announces Rs 40 lakh cash prize for weightlifter Harjinder Kaur

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today (August 2) announced a cash prize of Rs.40 lakh for weightlifter Harjinder Kaur, who secured a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Britain's Birmingham.

In a statement released here, the Chief Minister congratulated Kaur and said that her achievement had made the nation proud. Kaur is a promising athlete from the village of Mehas, which is close to Nabha.


The Punjab state government will give her a cash prize of Rs 40 lakh as per the Sports Policy of Punjab. Mann hoped that Kaur's success would motivate future athletes, particularly female ones, to succeed in sports and bring honour to their nation.

The Chief Minister declared that the government is dedicated to supporting athletes, and he added that these athletes will receive cash rewards anytime they perform well. He said that the government's top focus is rebuilding Punjab's sports culture.

Meanwhile, the residents of Nabha went into a frenzy following Harjinder's success in Birmingham.  "She worked very hard for the bronze, so this is a happy moment for her. We all had faith that she would succeed "Pritpal Singh, Harjinder's brother, said.

"Everyone in the family encouraged her to make a name for herself in this industry." Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, the sports minister for Punjab, also gave Kaur his congratulations on her bronze.
