CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, said on Saturday that Governor Banwarilal Purohit has approved the "One MLA - One Pension" Bill, which was passed by the state assembly in June of this year.

The Punjab State Legislature Members (Pension and Medical Facilities Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2022 was approved by the Punjab Assembly on June 30. It was a key promise made by the state's ruling AAP, which helped the party sweep to power despite the state's massive debt. No matter how many times the leader has been elected, an MLA will only be eligible for a pension for one term under the terms of the new law.
With this change, the state government hopes to annually save several crores of rupees. A former rule stated that an MLA's pension would increase if he won three consecutive elections. A three-time MLA would receive three times as much as a first-timer. The state gazette lists the benefits and perks given to MLAs.
"There shall be paid to every person, who remained as a member, a pension of sixty thousand rupees per mensem plus Dearness Allowance thereon (as admissible to the Punjab Government pensioners), irrespective of the number of terms he had served as a member and irrespective of the tenures of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, in which he had served as a member," according to the Punjab Government gazette.
It said, "Provided that a person who had served as a member shall be entitled to an increase of five percent, ten percent, and fifteen percent of the basic pension, admissible to him at the attainment of such age, respectively, when he attains the age of 65, 75, and 80 years.
