Chandigarh: The Amarinder government in Punjab is going to seek a $210 million loan from the World Bank or Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for a canal based water supply project for Amritsar and Ludhiana under the Punjab Nagar Seva Upgradation Project (PMSIP). According to an official statement, a virtual meeting led by CM Amarinder Singh decided to take a loan by the Punjab cabinet on Friday.

The Punjab Cabinet has authorized CM Amarinder Singh to take decisions to meet the objectives of the project and ensure successful and timely implementation of various activities proposed by the World Bank or AIIB. The Cabinet was informed that the present water supply system to the residents of Ludhiana and Amritsar towns is through deep bore tubewells installed at various places. However, over time, ground water levels are decreasing, leading to frequent replacement of tubewells. At the same time, the flow of water in tube wells decreases, causing residents often to face the problem of not getting enough water to drink.

The statement said, "To overcome this problem, now the World Bank/World Bank has been able to address this problem. It has been decided to supply water through canals to these two cities with a loan of $210 million from AIIB" it said, "The work of supplying water from canal to Amritsar city has already been entrusted while a proposal is being invited for Ludhiana city. The implementation period of the project will be three years after the assignment".
