Chandigarh: Former Minister of Punjab government and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia got a big relief from the High Court on Wednesday. Majithia, who is lodged in jail in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act), has been granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He is currently serving his sentence in Patiala Central Jail. A case was registered against him under the NDPS Act in December.

A division bench of Justices MS Ramachandra Rao and Sureshwar Thakur of the Punjab and Haryana High Court passed the order on Wednesday while hearing a bail plea filed by Bikram Singh Majithia. Majithia had surrendered in the case registered under the NDPS Act after the Punjab Assembly elections held on February 20 this year. The Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier reserved the verdict while hearing Majithia's bail plea on July 29.

Majithia had moved the high court for bail on May 23 over a case registered against him under several sections of the NDPS Act in December 2021. Bikram Singh Majithia is the brother-in-law of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and former deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and brother of former Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
