Chandigarh: On Saturday, Congress released the first list of 86 candidates for the Punjab Assembly elections. The party has cut the ticket of Congress MLA Harjot Kamal from Moga, Punjab and given it to Malvika Sood, sister of actor Sonu Sood. A few days ago, Malvika had joined the Congress. Angered by this decision of the party, Harjot has now left the Congress and joined the BJP. There is news that the Bharatiya Janata Party can field him in the elections from this seat.

On this occasion, Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said, “It is heartwarming to see Congress MLA from Moga and popular leader Dr Harjot Kamal Ji entering BJP. With his joining, our base will increase in the Moga area. He also has a lotus in his name. The Congress, under the leadership of party president Sonia Gandhi, finalized the names of its candidates in the meeting of the Central Election Committee held on Thursday. State CM Charanjit Singh Channi will once again be a candidate from the Chamkaur Sahib assembly seat. While state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu will contest from Amritsar East. Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa will be seen contesting from his current seat Dera Baba Nanak.

Punjab Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in the phase on February 14 and the results will come on March 10. The AAP is emerging as a major challenge for Congress as it has yielded good results in the recent Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections. In addition, the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP are also ready to take on the ruling Congress. The notification for elections in Punjab will be issued on January 21. Nominations will be filed by January 28, scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on January 29. There is a deadline for withdrawal by January 31.
