Punjab: Mann directs police to launch major crackdown on drug peddlers

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday urged the police force to start a big crackdown on drug peddlers and tighten the noose around any political functionary meddling with its anti-drug campaign, demonstrating zero tolerance for the evil of drugs.

According to a news statement from the Punjab Chief Minister's Office, the chief minister conducted a high-level meeting of the Special Task Force (STF) with senior police officers from all districts through video conferencing today at his official house.

Mann stated explicitly that if found conspiring with the drug cartel, no politicians nor officers would be spared. He did, however, request that the police officers operate freely and without political pressure in order to make Punjab a drug-free state.

The Chief Minister said, "Some police officers may have worked under duress in the past, but not all policemen are alike, in my opinion. However, in the past, a few drug dealers may have received governmental support, but this will no longer be the case, and all of you should fight tirelessly to rid the state of the scourge of narcotics. " Mann emphasised the importance of disrupting the drug supply chain, asking police personnel to arrest drug dealers rather than drug addicts, who have already become victims of the drug mafia.

He stated that with this move, the supply chain's backbone would be shattered and Punjab would soon become a drug-free state, adding that this could not be accomplished without the police force's full backing.
