Punjab to implement biofuel schemes to avoid stubble burning

Chandigarh: Invest Punjab has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Punjab State Office-Renewable Gas Association of India for the establishment of bio-fuel projects and compressed bio-gas plants (Bio-CNG) to assist reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by stubble burning. The Renewable Gas Association of India (RGAI) was established to provide solutions for increasing renewable gas production and utilisation.

"This will serve as an advocacy voice for the protection, preservation, and promotion of renewable gas to create additional and diverse market demand for renewable gas," stated Subodh Kumar, former Executive Director of Indian Oil and RGAI President, in response to the pact's signing. The RGAI General Secretary, Maninder Singh, stated that they will promote renewable gas produced from all feedstocks and employing competing and sustainable technologies for all end-use applications.

"This will assist scale up the potential chiefly due to the amount of unutilized agriculture feedstock - an estimated 140 million tonnes of agricultural leftovers are generated yearly - and increased usage of CNG and bio-CNG, the most cost-effective fuel when compared to petrol or diesel." According to Ashish Kumar, Managing Director of VERBIO India Pvt Ltd, which is building India's largest bio-fuel plant in Punjab, renewable gas might emerge as one of the most promising economic sectors in the province, with long-term, all-inclusive growth.
