Cuttack: The heat is on the State government over the alleged custodial death of one K Ramesh in Puri, with the Orissa High Court and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) taking cognizance of the incident and seeking reports on it.
The Orissa State Government today, January 11, through submission before the Orissa High Court reiterated its earlier claim that the death of K Apana @ Ramesh in Puri is not a case of custodial death. The State Government also submitted deceased K Apana’s post-mortem report to the court.
A division bench of the High Court comprising of Chief Justice S Muralidhar and Justice Sanju Panda conducted a hearing on the matter and directed the State Government to submit a status report of the case. The High Court has posted the next hearing in the case for January 22.
It is significant to state here that earlier in this matter, Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh had informed the court that three independent and impartial inquiries into the case are underway. Singh had told the court through an affidavit that a DSP rank officer of Human Rights Protection Cell of the State Police is investigating the case.
The Puri SP had further informed in his affidavit that the State Government in pursuance of the suggestion of the High Court has sanctioned an interim compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kin of the deceased in the alleged custodial death.
