MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with leaders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on Thursday and Friday, discussing the situation in Kazakhstan, according to the Kremlin.

According to sources, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Putin also spoke with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the phone many times, according to the report. "The discussion centred on recent events in Kazakhstan and coordinated steps within the CSTO mandate to combat international terrorism, restore order, and safeguard Kazakhstan's inhabitants," the statement continued.

Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has been routinely reporting to Putin on the status of the transfer of peacekeeping personnel to Kazakhstan and the accomplishment of given tasks since the start of the CSTO peacekeeping operation, according to the statement. 

According to numerous sources, violent protests in Kazakhstan have resulted in multiple deaths in recent days. A joint CSTO peacekeeping team landed in Kazakhstan on Friday to help preserve order, according to the Kazakh presidential press office, who added that they were only there for a short time to secure the safety of important installations.
