Raakhee was born on August 15, 1947, in a Bengali family in Ranaghat in Nadia district, West Bengal, just hours after the declaration of India's independence. She was married to Ajay Biswas, the director of Bengali films, as a teenager, but this marriage was unsuccessful. She is currently the wife of famous film director, poet and lyricist Gulzar. In the year 2003, she was awarded the title of Padma Shri.
In 1967, 20-year-old Raakhee acted in her first Bengali film Badhu Baran. After which she had her first Hindi film in 1970. She, along with Dharmendra, played the lead role in Rajshree Productions' Jeevan Murti. In 1971, Raakhee played a double role with Shashi Kapoor in Sharmili. All three films were popular and she became the leading actress of Hindi cinema in the 1970s. Her performances were praised in Shehzada (1972), Aankhon Aankhon Mein (1972), Heera Panna (1973), Daag (1973), Hamare Tumhare (1979), Aanchal (1980), Shriman Shrimati (1982) and Shakti (1982) .
