NEW DELHI: Days before leaving his post as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India,Raghuram Rajan today said he was willing to stay a bit longer but could not reach the "right kind of agreement" with the government on extension of his tenure. "Because of ... unfinished task, I was willing perhaps to stay provided we could reach the right kind of agreement, we didn't. That's where it ended", said Rajan. Most foreign investors say Rajan’s understanding of financial markets and economy is outstanding, but of politics is poor and that’s what cost his job.

Rajan has reportedly defended his speech on growing intolerance in the country, which had further ruffled the government. Rajan has also dismissed criticism of having spoken “out of turn.”

Rajan said it was "legitimate duty" and “moral responsibility" of public figures to tell young minds what good citizenship about.

He inturn also blames the media for “taking way from the speech what it wants to hear.”

When asked about his post-retirement plans,Rajan answered that he is going to stay away from public speaking for a while because it’s important for his successor Urjit Patel at RBI to get some space. He also expressed his wishes to travel around the country and learn it’s other aspects .

On advice to his successor,he said Patel is a grown –up man  and knows how to handle things. And I have confidence .He will manage it going forward. So I have no advice that will be of any use to him.
