New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi accused the government on Friday of its decision to shut down MSMEs during the Covid epidemic, saying that it's a "benefit" to friends and no job possibilities in a depressed economy.

He said, the government has confirmed in Parliament that 9 percent of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) had shut down as a result of the epidemic. "I had asked the administration some serious questions concerning MSMEs, and in response, they admitted that nine percent of MSMEs had closed down during the Covid period." In a Hindi tweet, Gandhi said, "Meaning benefit to pals, poor economy, and end to jobs." Gandhi also shared the written reply of the government in response to his query in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

"To examine the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on MSMES, the National Small Industries Corporation Limited conducted an on-line survey in August 2020, covering about 5,774 MSMES in 32 States/Unnion Territories. According to the poll, 91 percent of MSMES were operational, whereas nine percent of MSMES closed as a result of COVID-19," the government wrote in response to Gandhi's question.

He also said that RBI has advised them that state-by-state data on nonperforming assets in the MSME sector is not available. According to published reports, a total of 9,052 self-employed persons (Business) committed suicide in 2019 and a total of 11,716 self-employed persons (Business) committed suicide in 2020, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
