New Delhi: In a recent post on X, Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, congratulated Professor Muhammad Yunus on his appointment as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. Gandhi emphasized the urgent need for peace and normalcy, stating, "Congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on being sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. A swift restoration of peace and normalcy is the need of the hour."

Muhammad Yunus, the renowned Nobel laureate and economist, took the oath of office on Thursday night in Dhaka, just three days after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and left the country amid widespread unrest. At 84 years old, Yunus is stepping into a challenging role at a time of significant turmoil in Bangladesh.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary in charge of communications, also praised Yunus, calling him a legend in microfinance and social entrepreneurship. Ramesh highlighted Yunus's impact on the field, stating, "I have known him very well. During 2011-2014, my colleagues and I in the Ministry of Rural Development closely studied and tracked his Grameen Bank initiatives for our National Rural Livelihoods Mission Aajeevika, based on bank-linked women self-help groups."

Ramesh further noted, "Dr. Manmohan Singh has been a great admirer of his work. India wishes him all the very best in his new assignment in Dhaka. There are huge expectations from him across the world, most of all the hope that the wonderful cultural diversity of Bangladesh—which is also a source of economic strength—is protected and allowed to flourish."

Bangladesh has been experiencing significant unrest following protests led mainly by students who are demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs. Yunus's primary tasks will include restoring peace and preparing for new elections.

Upon his arrival in Bangladesh, Yunus made a heartfelt appeal to his supporters, urging the population to maintain calm and end the chaos. He stressed that ensuring no attacks are carried out against anyone in the country is the "first responsibility" of the interim government, according to the Daily Star.
