On Sunday, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) reacted sharply to Rahul Gandhi's 'Karma awaits' remark on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the Congress chief is playing politics of “curse and abuse” anticipating his party's defeat in the elections. Defending Modi for his comments on late PM Rajiv Gandhi, senior BJP leader and Union minister Prakash Javadekar clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not comment on Rajiv's death but the functioning of the Congress government under him.

“Karma awaits everybody. Congress will be paying for their 'karma' (deeds) heavily. They have looted the country. Congress means falsehood and loot,” Javadekar said while addressing a press meeting here at the BJP headquarters. On Saturday, while addressing a poll rally in Uttar Pradesh, Pm Modi had launched a vitriolic attack against Rahul. He said, “Your father was termed 'Mr. Clean' by his courtiers, but his life ended as 'Bhrashtachari No 1' (Corrupt No 1)."

Modi's comments drew sharp reactions from Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, P Chidambaram and many other Congress leaders. Several Opposition leaders and Lalu Prasad's son Tejashwi Yadav retweeted Rahul's 'Karma awaits' tweet in solidarity with the Congress president.“Whatever political disagreements people may have, those who are martyred deserve our respect and their families deserve our empathy. Election or not, this is basic humanity. The statement by the PM (Modi) indicates levels to which people can stoop for the sake of clinging on to power,” Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said.
