New Delhi: Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has attacked PM Modi over bodies found in river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh in the past few days. Rahul Gandhi tweeted indirectly, "Ganga used to be called as mother Ganga and see we are making her cry." Rahul Gandhi also shared a newspaper report claiming that more than 2,000 bodies have been found in a 1,140 km range on the banks of river Ganga.

Rahul Gandhi's remarks are aimed at an old statement by PM Modi. Before becoming PM, during the lok sabha election 2014 campaign, Narendra Modi had said in his constituency Varanasi, "I have neither come here nor have I been sent. In fact, I have been called here by Mother Ganga. Coming here, I feel the same way that a child does in his mother's lap." In the past few days, many corpses have been spotted in or on the banks of the River Ganga and it is feared that the bodies flowing into the river belong to corona infected people.

A case was first reported in Buxar district of Bihar where several bodies were found flowing into the river. Such pictures have since surfaced from several districts of Uttar Pradesh. CM Yogi Adityanath had on Friday directed the home department to step up patrolling to prevent the discharge of dead bodies in rivers in Uttar Pradesh.
