New Delhi: Former Congress National President and MP from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat Rahul Gandhi will appear before surat chief judicial magistrate's court on Friday and record his statement in a criminal defamation case filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi over his "Modi surname remarks." The Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court of AN Dave has ordered Rahul Gandhi to appear before the court on October 25 after the statements of two witnesses were recorded in the court. Rahul had earlier appeared before the court on June 24.

The case relates to the Alleged Remarks of the Congress leader at the Lok Sabha election rally in Kolar, Karnataka on April 13, 2019. During the rally, Rahul had said, 'Why is Modi in the name of all thieves, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi and Narendra Modi?' A case under sections 499 and 500 of IPC was registered against Congress Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi in Surat on a complaint by Gujarat Modhvanik Samaj President Purnesh Modi.

Purnesh Modi is the Tourism and Transport Minister in the Gujarat Cabinet. Rahul has appeared twice in a Surat court in the case. The court has given a verbal direction to Rahul to appear again after the testimony of two new witnesses. Gujarat Congress is gearing up to transform Rahul's visit as a festival and political rally as Gujarat goes to the polls next year.
