NEW DELHI: After the embarrassing defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had offered to resign as the National President of the Congress, claiming responsibility for the defeat before the Congress Working Committee meeting convened on May 25. However, all CWC members present at the meeting unanimously rejected Rahul Gandhi's resignation. Even after that, Rahul persisted with his decision and has given the party's veteran leaders a month's time to elect a new president.

Every attempt to persuade Rahul Gandhi has failed since the offer of resignation. Several top Congress leaders have advised Rahul Gandhi to continue to lead the party in times of crisis. Meanwhile, Rahul continued to ask the leaders to start the process of electing the next president. At the same time, Rahul also indicated that he would continue to work for the party without being party president. But today, a month after the CWC meeting, there is still confusion.

According to sources, Rahul will stay away from the Congress presidency for the next one-and-a-half years, reportedly the way out by senior Congress leaders. During the visit, Rahul Gandhi will hold direct talks with Congress workers across the country without any post. On the other hand, a meeting of the Congress Working Committee on the selection of the new Congress President is likely to be held soon.
