CHENNAI: Southern Railway has installed Braille navigation maps at Chennai Central Railway station and Egmore station in an effort to make the railway stations accessible to those who are blind or visually challenged.

This will assist the visually impaired traverse on their own. The Braille Maps were set up on Monday.
The 3X3-foot map is affixed to the entrances of the two railroad stations. It will aid visually impaired travelers with locating ticket booths, restrooms for the physically challenged, concourse areas, water faucets, waiting rooms, cloakrooms, foot over bridges, and platform entry and departure points while navigating the station.

According to a statement from Southern Railway, Braille boards and signs have QR codes that may be scanned with smartphones to play audio messages. The passengers will be guided by these auditory messages to their desired destinations.

The visually impaired will now be able to find their way about the station, find their way to the platforms they need to be on, and get directions to the restrooms or other locations they need to go. Excellent work by Southern Railway."

Stainless steel handrails have also been provided in the FOBs for hassle-free movement of visually impaired passengers. Braille signage has also been set up to help the visually impaired in accessing various passenger amenities available at the stations.
