Jaipur: Rajasthan's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is contemplating the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which would standardize personal laws such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession across all citizens. This move follows Uttarakhand's recent adoption of UCC legislation.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel informed the state assembly on Thursday that the government is reviewing the UCC proposal. He assured that a bill would be introduced at the appropriate time after a thorough examination of all relevant aspects. The statement came in response to a query from lawmaker Kalicharan Saraf.
Uttarakhand became the first state to pass a UCC law in February, and other BJP-ruled states, including Assam, have expressed intentions to follow suit. The UCC is part of the BJP's ideological agenda and aligns with Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, which advocates for a common civil code. Historically, personal matters have been governed by religion-based civil codes.
Opposition Congress spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi criticized the UCC proposal, describing it as an assault on India’s diverse cultural heritage. He argued that the current system of varied laws reflects the distinct traditions and needs of different groups, including tribal and minority communities. Chaturvedi contended that the UCC threatens to undermine this diversity, which he views as unacceptable.
