Jaipur: An order issued by the police headquarters in Rajasthan has sparked a controversy. The order prohibits the construction of places of worship in police stations. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has termed it as a Tughlaqi decree saying it is an insult to the culture of Hindus and an attack on the Hindu faith will not be tolerated at all.

Additional Director General (ADG) Of Rajasthan Police Housing Department A Ponnuchami issued the order on October 25. It said that in the last few years, there has been an increased tendency in various offices and premises of the Police Department to build places of worship in the name of faith, which is not in accordance with the law. The order has declared religious places illegal in public places citing the Rajasthan Religious Buildings and Shrines Act, 1954. ADG said that there is no provision of places of worship on the map of administrative buildings of police stations.

At the same time, he has ordered to ensure that the order is followed in letter and spirit. According to the report, a clarification has also been issued from the police headquarters following the controversy over the order. It said that the places of worship already constructed in police stations and police offices will not come under this order. It has been asked to ensure its compliance in the newly constructed police station premises. According to the report, generally, every police station in Rajasthan has evening salutations and worshipping in the evening. The BJP has termed the latest decision as appeasement and termed it an attack on the Hindu faith. Party MP Kirodi Lal Meena has demanded the Congress government in Rajasthan to withdraw the order immediately.
