Udaipur: As the date of elections for the four Rajya Sabha seats in Rajasthan nears, political activities are gaining momentum. The ruling Congress in the state has decided to send itself and its supporting MLAs to Udaipur. The Rajasthan unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party has demanded that the six MLAs who joined the Congress after winning the elections on its ticket should be stopped from participating in these elections.
According to media reports, the Rajasthan Congress has decided to shift its MLAs to a hotel in Udaipur where the party had organised an all-India Chintan Shivir in mid-May. The BJP can poach its MLAs, party leaders said. A Congress leader from the state was briefed about the developments. He said the party MLAs have been asked to reach Udaipur. Some are likely to leave today, and the rest will reach by tomorrow. Apart from Congress MLAs, independent MLAs and other parties who are supporting the ruling party will also be shifted to Udaipur. A total of 5 candidates are now in the fray for the 4 Rajya Sabha seats from the state, including 3 from Congress, one from BJP and one independent. The vote will take place on June 10.
The congress' decision to keep its MLAs at one place ahead of the Rajya Sabha comes a day after media baron Subhash Chandra filed his nomination as an independent candidate. Chandra is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Haryana and his term is set to end on August 1. The BJP is supporting him in this election. The Congress has fielded Mukul Wasnik, Pramod Tiwari and Randeep Singh Surjewala while the BJP has fielded former minister Ghanshyam Tiwari. Cm Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday termed the BJP's move to support independent candidate Chandra as a game and said that the party wants to join the buy-in.
