Chennai: P. Ravichandran, one of seven prisoners in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has been granted an ordinary leave of 30 days by the Tamil Nadu government. Ravichandran has been granted a leave of absence six times during his 29-year sentence. According to an order issued by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on September 2, 2021, the government has granted him 30 days of leave.

By virtue of Section 432 of the CrPC (Government's power to suspend or remit sentences) and Rule 40 of the Tamil Nadu Suspension of Sentences Rules, 1982, he has been granted ordinary leave (Power of Government to give exemption to the rules).

Justices V. Bharathidasan and S. Ananthi of the Madras High Court's Madurai bench had asked the state to issue a suitable order on Ravichandran's mother P. Rajeswari's appeal. She had told the government and the court that her son needed surgery on his right eye and would need two months off work.

The Tamil Nadu government has also been ordered by the Madurai Bench to provide a robust police escort to the convict during his furlough term, as well as a daily compliance report. The court has also ordered him to report to the local police station on a daily basis.
