Rajkumar was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and graduated in commerce. His father Suresh Hirani wanted him to be a chartered accountant. Rajkumar used to help his father in his business, but he wanted to become an actor in Hindi films. Due to which he used to join Hindi theatre during college days. Later, he did an editing course from Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Rajkumar started his career with advertising. In films, he established himself as a producer-director. Hirani turned to advertisements when he did not get the job of editing in films. He also appeared in one or two ads.

He first worked with Vidhu Vinod Chopra and also worked in the promos and trailer of '1942: A Love Story'. Then he never looked back. Hirani directed 'Munnabhai MBBS' in the year 2003. After this, he made 'Lage Raho Munnabhai'. This film also got a lot of love from the audience.
