Bangalore: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today reached the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) production centre in Bengaluru on Friday. Here he inaugurated the country's first indigenous driverless Metro car. In the meantime, Rajnath said, "I am proud of the excellent work that a team of engineers and technicians is doing in BEML. These are the real warriors of self-reliant India, who are taking India forward towards development."

The defence minister further said that the socio-economic growth that has come up in India after independence has contributed immensely to the public sector undertakings. Whether it is capital formation, employment opportunities or encouraging R & D, PSUs have played an important role in all sectors. He said that under the Self-Reliant India campaign, the government has recently made changes in some policies that you are familiar with, including the Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP) and the creation of a new Defence Acquisition Process (DAP), etc.

Rajnath Singh said that the recent purchase of 83 Tejas fighter aircraft worth 50 thousand crore rupees has proved to be an important step in this direction. This will create 50 thousand employment opportunities. The participation of 500 MSMEs and private companies like Tata, L&T and Wem-Tech has enhanced coordination between the public and private sectors.
