New Delhi: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to unveil the first statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Lakshadweep. For this, he is going to the capital Kavaratti today on 2nd October 2021 on Bapu's birth anniversary. This will be the first public statue in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Collector S Askar Ali has said that a 6 feet long brass statue will be unveiled on Kavaratti Island. The administration has also organized a 3-day event on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti for the same.

The programmes will continue till Saturday when Rajnath Singh will unveil the statue and dedicate it to the public. Well, this is not the first time that this effort is taking place. In 2010 also, the government had decided to unveil a semi-statue of Mahatma Gandhi and a tender was also floated to a Kerala company for the same. However, the statue could not be installed even after it was brought to the islands due to protests by locals.

The new administrator Praful Khoda Patel had to face a lot of problems in bringing in a plan to make the islands a tourist destination like the Maldives. The administration said this will be the first statue of fighters who have given their all in the Indian freedom struggle. The Andhra Pradesh company was given to 'Shri Sai Baba Mega Silpasala', which has been built in 2 hours at a cost of Rs 8.2 lakh.
