New Delhi: On January 31, a meeting of Rajya Sabha floor leaders will be held at 5 p.m., chaired by Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu. This conference will be held virtually due to the COVID outbreak and the fact that India's Vice President is recovering from a bout of the disease, according to sources.

The annual meeting will serve to set the tone for the next Budget Session of Parliament, in which opposition leaders are anticipated to confront the government on a number of crucial topics.

The opposition has refused to allow the Houses to operate in recent sessions, seeking answers from the administration on a variety of problems, including the Pegasus snooping incident, Central agricultural rules, inflation, and unemployment.

The last Winter Session of Parliament was a total washout in the Upper House, with 12 opposition MPs suspended for the duration of the session. While the government, through its floor leaders, notably Leader of the House Piyush Goyal, repeatedly asked the Opposition leaders to apologise to the Chairman for their disorderly behaviour during the Monsoon Session, which led to the suspension, the opposition leaders refused.

A united opposition refused to apologise, and members of Parliament sat in protest at the Gandhi statue in Parliament for the whole of the Winter Session.

The Budget Session of Parliament will begin on January 31 with President Ram Nath Kovind delivering a joint address to both Houses, as well as the presentation of the economic survey.
