Former Congress legislator from Thane in Maharashtra, Kanti Koli, died following a prolonged illness which was reported on Friday.

Today, President Ram Nath Kovind expressed grief over the death of former Thane MLA and Congress leader Kanti Koli.  In his condolence letter sent to the bereaved family members, the president said he was anguished by Koli's demise. ''Koli had made social service as the prime objective of his life,'' Kovind said in the letter.

Koli was elected as a councillor in the erstwhile Thane Municipal Council for one term. Later, he represented the Thane Assembly constituency for two terms between 1980 and 1990. He had served as the president of the Maharashtra unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Koli Samaj, New Delhi. He is survived by his wife, two sons and other family members, the sources said.
