New Delhi: These days there has been a huge increase in onion prices in many parts of the country. This has increased the problems of common people. Onion prices have reached Rs 50 to 60 per kg. On the rising price of onions, Union Consumer Affairs and Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that there is enough buffer stock of onions in the country. Paswan has told the states that they can grow onions according to their needs. He said that floods have caused havoc in most of the onion producing states.

Due to this, onion supply has been disrupted. Due to floods in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, there is no supply of onion from the rest of the country. According to the latest data on daily retail price released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the maximum price of onion is Rs 56 per kg, while the average price is Rs 44 per kg. Onion prices have increased in metros. Onion prices are being sold at Rs 34 per kg in Chennai metropolis of South India, while Rs 43 per kg is being sold in Mumbai.

In the capital, Onion is being sold at Rs 44 and Kolkata at Rs 45 a kg. In some parts of the country, onions are sold at a price of 50 to 60 rupees per kg. Paswan said that due to the production being more than the domestic demand of onion, the government agency NAFED has purchased a buffer stock of onion. He said that strict action will be taken against illegal hoarders of onions.
