Mumbai: Ramesh Parmar was 25 years old. He worked as a cleaner in Shiv Sena ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Now he has consumed poison and committed suicide. The reason is, Ramesh did not get a salary for two years. According to family members, he was in debt due to non-payment of salary and most of them fell asleep hungry at night. After the suicide case was heated, the BMC has given Ramesh's brother a job and rs 1 lakh as compensation.

Ramesh's uncle Pitambar Parmar has told that Ramesh has a younger brother, who is mentally challenged. The responsibility of the whole family was on him. Ramesh was not paid salary for the last two years. Most of the night he went to bed hungry. He even begged for food. Ramesh also had debt and his health started deteriorating. The officers told him that his service file was stuck somewhere. On Thursday (December 23), he committed suicide by consuming poison in the ward office itself. We performed his last rites on Friday morning. We demand strict action against the officials responsible for his death. BJP corporator Vinod Mishra raised questions on this suicide and demanded an FIR against the BMC officials and compensation of 50 lakhs to the family of the deceased. The Standing Committee on Friday gave its approval to give a job to the brother of the deceased sweeper. After this Vinod Mishra said that, 'BMC has given the job to Ramesh's brother. But by doing this BMC cannot escape the responsibility of Ramesh's death.

Ramesh had been waiting for two years to pay his salary. When he saw no hope of any salary, he was disappointed and self-conscious. Ramesh's father was also a cleaner in the BMC. He was given a job after his father passed away in 2019. Whenever he went to higher authorities for salary, he was told that his service file was not available. Ramesh reportedly approached an officer on December 20 with his file and said his salary was not being paid for 2 years. The officer did not help him and reprimanded him for the cleanliness mess. He then lost hope and committed suicide. Both BMC mayor Kishori Pednekar and deputy mayor Suhas Wadkar are from the Shiv Sena party. Following the suicide, the BMC has suspended 3 officers for negligence.
