The epic Ramayana describes how Lord Rama and his army of monkeys and bears constructed a bridge of floating stones, known as Ram Setu or Adam's Bridge, to cross the ocean. Rameshwaram is said to be the starting point of this bridge, making it a sacred place for Hindus. The history of Rameshwaram is also closely linked to the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple. According to the epic, Lord Rama built a bridge of floating stones from Rameshwaram to Lanka, Sri Lanka to rescue his wife, Sita. It holds historical and religious significance. It is believed to be the place where Lord Rama broke the bridge with his Dhanush after rescuing Sita. Dhanushkodi is known for its pristine beaches, scenic beauty, and the remains of the old town that was devastated by a cyclone in 1964. Agnitheertham is a sacred beach in Rameshwaram. It is believed that Lord Rama took a bath here before his battle with Ravana. The beach holds religious significance, and devotees consider it auspicious to take a dip in the sea and perform rituals.
