New Delhi: Congress veteran and former Union Minister Captain Satish Sharma died in Goa on Wednesday. He was 73. Sharma was suffering from cancer and had been ill for some time. His son Sameer said that he died in Goa at 8.16 pm. His last rites will be performed in Delhi on Friday. His body is being brought from Goa to Delhi.
Sharma, who was close to former PM Rajiv Gandhi, was the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas from 1993 to 1996 in the Narasimha Rao government. Born on 11 October 1947 in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Sharma was a professional commercial pilot. He representing Rae Bareli and Amethi constituencies, was elected three times Lok Sabha MP. He was also a three-time Rajya Sabha member and represented Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
He first became a Rajya Sabha MP in June 1986 and later was elected a Lok Sabha member from Amethi in 1991 after the death of Rajiv Gandhi. After this, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha from July 2004 to 2016. Sharma is survived by his wife and a son and a daughter. Expressing condolences to Sharma's family, Congress spokesperson Ranjip Surjewala tweeted, "I am deeply saddened by the death of former Union Minister Captain Satish Sharma. Captain Sharma was an epitome of dedication and loyalty. My condolences to his family and friends."
