The second day of Holi, is known as Dhulandi or Rang Panchami. Rang Panchami stands for the fifth day of the month of Phalghun. The second day of Holi is celebrated to mark the new beginning of the year with the commencement of Spring, the new harvest festival and a new position of the moon’s orbiting. Holi is known as the festival of colors because people get together with their friends, family and loved ones and smear color on each other. People of all ages play with water balloons, pichkaris, and a lot of powdered colors.

Another reason why people in some parts of India celebrate Holi by playing with colours is related to the mythological tale about Krishna and Radha. As an infant Krishna’s skin started turning blue after a demon poisoned him, and by the time he grew up, he was embarrassed of his skin color and wan’t sure if Radha would want to be friends with him. In order to make it easier for Krishna, his mother suggested that he apply the color of his choice on Radha too. From then on, this day when Krishna applied color on Radha’s face is considered to be Rang Panchami.

While Holi is most often celebrated for two reasons, while one is to welcome spring, the other is to celebrate the triumph of good over the bad. The first day of Holi is celebrated as Holika Dahan when people come together and burn a bonfire to commemorate the mythological tale of Prahlad who was saved by Vishnu when his evil aunt, Holika stepped into a bonfire with him on her lap.
