In 2013 Mardaani, the actress was seen essaying the role of a daredevil cop, Shivani Shivaji Roy. In the flick, she is seen taking on the kingpin of child-trafficking, that was played by Tahir Bhasin.  Talking about Rani's role in the sequel, according to the reports, the actress will be reprising the same role of Shivani but now as the Superintendent of Police who battles a 21-year-old merciless villain.

Last year Rani confirmed her role in the film and was quoted in a statement as saying, "Mardaani is and will always remain close to my heart. Right since its release, everyone has asked me time and again when I would be doing Mardaani 2 and I am sure this announcement will come as a present surprise to them all. Gopi has written an extraordinary script, that we’ll all love and I can’t wait to Start shooting this film soon."

Gopi Puthran will direct Mardaani 2  and is slated to release in the second half of 2019.
