Sri Lanka Live Updates: Ranil Wickremesinghe, the country's acting president, was elected as Sri Lanka's next president on Wednesday by the country's parliament. Of the 219 votes in total that were deemed legitimate, he received 134. Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, the leader of the left-leaning Janatha Vimukti Peramuna party, and Dullas Alahapperuma, a lawmaker from the ruling party, were the other contenders.
A faction of the ruling party, which has 145 seats overall as of the last parliamentary election in 2020, supported Wickremesinghe. According to Reuters, Alahapperuma has the backing of both the other sector and the main opposition party, which last time around won 54 seats.
Gopal Baglay, the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, said that India will support an "early and effective" economic recovery for Sri Lanka. To that effect, India, which has provided Sri Lanka with approximately $4 billion in aid, would "moving forward" like to attract "additional investment" to aid the nation in developing the skills necessary to address the country's economic issues, according to Baglay.
The voting has concluded, and the officials of the Parliament are currently confirming the results. After tearing down the voting booths, they are now picking up each ballot from the box, inspecting it, and classifying it as "valid" or "invalid" before beginning the counting process.
