The auction house in Geneva which described the rarest of rare, purple-pink diamond as “a true wonder of nature” was sold for a whopping $26.6 million at Sotheby’s in Geneva earlier this week. The gem named ‘The Spirit of the Rose’, opened at $16 million bid.

When the hammer went down, the flawless gem had finally gone up to a record price which was shelled out by a telephone bidder who remained anonymous. The Jewellery expert Benoit Repellin said the 14.83-carat stone was the largest pink diamond with that colour grading to go on the block. Sotheby’s auction centre informed that the diamond was mined in Russia in July 2017, and was cut from the largest pink crystal ever found in the Russian country.

Coloured stones, and especially high-quality pink diamonds, are very expensive and highly sought after. “The lucky buyer could well profit from prices soaring for pink diamonds in the coming years thanks to increased rarity,” said Tobias Kormind, managing director of 77 Diamonds, Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller.
