Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been recognized as the world's leading central banker for the second consecutive year. This honor, given by the US-based Global Finance magazine, comes just a year after he was awarded 'Governor of the Year' for his adept handling of multiple economic crises.

Das, who has consistently received an 'A+' rating, stands out among central bankers from around the globe. He is one of three central bank governors to achieve this top grade, alongside Christian Kettel Thomsen of Denmark and Thomas Jordan of Switzerland.

Global Finance magazine evaluates central bankers based on their success in controlling inflation, achieving economic growth goals, maintaining currency stability, and managing interest rates. An 'A+' rating indicates exceptional performance in these areas.

Shaktikanta Das' Career Achievements

Shaktikanta Das, a 1980-batch IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, has had a significant impact on India’s economic policies. Born in Bhubaneswar, Das played a crucial role in Tamil Nadu's successful SEZs and industrial policies. He was known for his resistance to political pressures, such as opposing the allocation of government land to private companies without a bidding process.

Despite his cautious reputation, Das has made bold decisions, including dismantling the Foreign Investment Promotion Board to streamline clearances. His career includes notable contributions across different finance ministries, having worked under P. Chidambaram, Pranab Mukherjee, and Arun Jaitley. Das has been instrumental in preparing eight Union budgets and played a key role in drafting the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code and formulating laws on overseas black money.

Before joining the RBI, Das was pivotal in negotiating the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework and working on tax evader information sharing with Switzerland.

Das as RBI Governor

Under Das’ leadership, the RBI has navigated complex economic challenges, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the Central Banking awards ceremony in London, Das emphasized the expanded roles of central banks in addressing unprecedented economic difficulties.

He remarked, “In recent times, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, central banks — who are at the core of monetary and financial systems — have been called to do ‘heavy lifting’ well beyond their traditional mandate.”

Das' continued recognition underscores his exceptional leadership and significant contributions to global monetary policy.
