Maa Durga, also known as Shakti or Devi, is one of the most revered deities in Hindu mythology. Devotees say that she originated to kill the demon Mahishasura. It is also believed that she is the protector of the good and harmony in the world. Below mentioned are the few unknown facts about Maa Durga:

-In Sanskrit, Durga means “a fort” or “a place which is difficult to win”. The name Durga is given to the goddess because of her protective and combative nature.

-Like Shiva, Maa Durga is known as “Triyambake”, which means that she is the three-eyed goddess. All the three eyes of the deity have great significance. The left eye represents desire, the right eye represents action and the third one or the central eye represents the knowledge.

-Maa Durga is depicted as riding a lion. It symbolises her unlimited power and determination. It also highlights her mastery over all these qualities. Devotees believe that she has the power to beat Ego, jealousy and hatred.

-It is believed that Maa Durga has 8-10 arms. These arms represent the 8 quadrants or directions in Hinduism. People believe that Maa Durga protects her devotees from all the directions.

-There are nine divine forms of Maa Durga. These are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandrakanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri. All these nine forms are worshipped during Navratri.
