Rebel Trinamool Congress leader Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday submitted his resignation as an MLA to the West Bengal assembly secretary. This has added new fuel to month-long speculations of his imminent exit from the party.

Adhikari, the MLA of Nandigram constituency in Purba Medinipur district, resigned from the state cabinet last month. rumors rule the roost that he could join the Bharatiya Janata Party in time for Union home minister Amit Shah’s Bengal visit. On Tuesday, BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya called up Adhikari to wish him on his birthday, adding to speculation, as per media report.

Adhikari, whose influence could sway votes in as many as 40 of the 294-seat Bengal assembly, has been maintaining distance from the party leadership for quite some time. Backchannel discussion proved futile after those close to Adhikari said he was discontented with the way TMC leaders rushed to the press and pronounced the meeting a success.
