HEALTH RESEARCH: According to a recent study conducted in Tehran, it is said - eating more refined grains may raise the chance of developing premature coronary artery disease (PCAD).

The results show that consuming whole grains lowers the chance of developing early heart disease whereas consuming refined grains increases the risk.

Author Mohammad Amin Khajavi Gaskarei from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences remarked, "A diet that includes ingesting a high number of unhealthy and refined grains might be considered equivalent to consuming a diet including a lot of unhealthy sugars and oils."

For the research that will be presented at the ACC Middle East in 2022.  The team included 2,099 patients with PCAD from hospitals with catheterization labs in various cities and ethnic groups throughout Iran who underwent coronary angiography in conjunction with the 13th Emirates Cardiac Society Congress, which will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, October 7-9, 2022.

The control group consisted of 1,168 patients with normal coronary arteries, while 1,369 patients with CAD with obstruction equal to or greater than 75% in at least one coronary artery were included.

To analyse dietary behaviours and determine the relationship between whole grain and refined grain intake and the risk of PCAD in people without a history of heart disease, participants completed a food frequency questionnaire.
After controlling for covariates, a higher intake of refined grains was linked to a higher risk of PCAD, while a higher intake of whole grains was linked in the opposite direction to a lower risk of PCAD.
