It is a common phenomenon that when you bring groceries at home the first thing that comes to your mind is to keep all the perishable items in the refrigerator. We often pile up things in our fridge to increase their shelf life. Despite, this traditional belief, refrigerating certain foods can affect their surface and quality.

1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes will lose all their flavour and texture when stored in the refrigerator. It starts becoming mushy. In order to ripen the tomatoes faster, keep them stored out of the fridge in paper or plastic bags.

2. Stone fruits
Cold temperature can affect their quality and flavour. Stone fruits such as peach, cherry and plum ripen at room temperature. Keep stone fruits wrapped in a paper bag in a cool, dry place.

3. Onions
If you put onions in the fridge, the humidity of the refrigerator turns them soft and mouldy.

4. Oils
Oils on refrigeration will thicken up and get cloudy. The only oils that you must refrigerate are nut-based oils.

5. Hot sauces
Thanks to the vinegar and preservatives, it can live happily in the pantry for up to three years.

6. Herbs
Fresh herbs lose their original flavour when kept in the fridge. They also wilt and dry up in the fridge.

7. Garlic
If you keep garlic in the fridge, it will reduce the flavour of garlic and affect its lifespan.

8. Coffee
The cold temperature makes the honey seize up and crystallize. Store honey in an airtight container in the pantry.

9. Bread
The refrigerator causes it to dry faster. Instead, keep what you’ll eat within four days at room temperature and freeze the rest.Store in a cool cupboard or bread box for a fresh slice.

10. Potatoes
When refrigerated, the starch in potatoes breaks down and affects the flavour of potatoes, therefore it is best to store them in dry paper bags.
